Should I get LASIK?
Approximately 145 million Americans (half the population) are dependent on corrective lenses to achieve a quality of vision that is satisfactory for their daily needs. Since the early 1990’s, lasers have been the forefront of surgical vision correction. LASIK is the preferred method for treating nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism with an overall level of satisfaction greater than 95%.
What does LASIK actually mean? How does it work? Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a blade free procedure performed with a laser to reshape the cornea in order to improve vision. There are variations of LASIK, with iLASIK being the most advanced form of vision correction currently available. iLASIK has been studied by NASA for use on astronauts and the Navy has recently put out a statement saying this technology remains effective in extreme conditions such as weather and altitude, leaving the average customer to feel confident in the outcome for the long-term.
Am I a candidate?
The good news is most patients are candidates for LASIK! If you are interested in having laser vision correction, contact your optometrist for an appointment. Your doctor will determine if you are a candidate based on the stability of your prescription, your visual expectations after the procedure, and if you have the appropriate amount of corneal tissue to withstand the reshaping process of LASIK.
What is the recovery time?
Depending on the type of LASIK procedure that is best suited for you, most patients will have 20/20 vision within the first 12-24 hours. Post operatively, you will be followed by your optometrist the following day, week and month from the procedure.
Will I ever need glasses or contact lenses again?
Results can vary, with many patients achieving 20/20 vision. A small percentage of patients will still need correction for reading or driving in certain lighting conditions, but most are not dependent on corrective lenses after LASIK.
